Stony-iron meteorites are the rarest of the three main types of meteorites. The stony-irons are further divided into two groups: the mesosiderites and pallasites.
Pallasites are perhaps the most alluring of all meteorites, and they are certainly of great interest to collectors and enthusiasts. Pallasites consist of a nickel-iron matrix rich in olivine crystals. Pallasites are believed to have formed at the core/mantle boundary of large asteroids and they are rare.
They come to us from large asteroids with molten cores that once orbited the sun between Mars and Jupiter. The pattern of every meteorite is unique. Catastrophic collisions within the Asteroid Belt shattered some asteroids, sending pieces in all directions. Some of them eventually encountered Earth’s gravitational pull, resulting in a fiery journey through our atmosphere at speeds up to 100,000 miles per hour.
Small meteorite specimens give everyone an opportunity to actually hold and own a piece of outer space and are great as unique gifts, learning tools, and just for fun.
